The Gyp Hill Premiere
Thanks to the efforts of country music star Martina McBride, the City will receive a new playground this spring, according to an announcement by Mayor Steve Etheridge.
The new playground, which will be located in the City Park, is a result of McBride’s humanitarian efforts.
"This is very exciting and I think it will be a great project and a lot of fun for the community," said Etheridge. "We can’t begin to express our thanks to Martina."
In recognition of her success as a musician and humanitarian, McBride was the 2004 recipient of the coveted ACMA/The Home Depot Humanitarian Award. The award allowed her to choose a community for a playground built in her honor.
The building of the new playground will be made possible through the efforts and partnership of The Home Depot and KaBOOM!. It will be constructed in one day by volunteers from both the KaBOOM! organization and the City, according to Etheridge.
Etheridge said that construction is tentatively planned for March, adding that it will take about eight to ten weeks of preparation to prepare for the build.
"We will need approximately 100 volunteers from the community to work with the engineers and the volunteers," said Etheridge.
"Initially, the project managers will meet with the children of the community and the parents to find out what they want their playground to be," said Etheridge.
"Then, the engineers will draw up three plans from which the citizens will chose the one they want to build," he said.
Some preparation of the site will occur prior to the build day, when construction is scheduled to start at sunup and end at sundown.
"We were told that the playground equipment would be supplied by PlayWorld Systems and is made of metal and plastic," said Etheridge. "Surfacing material will be engineered wood-fiber."
The design may also include picnic tables and benches.
According to Etheridge, the City will need at least eight adult volunteers to run seven or eight committees.
The volunteers will also need to devote a considerable amount of time each week of the planning stage, assuming responsibility for the progress of the committees’ assignments.
"We will need 50-75 volunteers for the day of the build," said Etheridge.
